Woodside and Portola Valley are among the most peaceful places on the Peninsula. Large lots, winding roads, redwoods, oaks and open hills give these towns a quiet, hidden beauty: many homes can barely be seen from the road, and that is exactly how their owners like it.
A home here should feel as if it belongs in the woods. We design around the existing trees, the slope and the natural drainage of the site, and use warm, natural materials such as wood, stone and glass so the house settles quietly into its setting. Privacy is one of the main reasons people choose these towns, so we plan for it from the start: siting the house away from roads and neighbors, using the landscape and the trees as natural screens, and placing windows and outdoor living spaces so they open to the views rather than to the street. The result is a home that is open and full of light inside, yet private and calm.
Both towns care deeply about their rural character, and their design review reflects it. We respect the peace and the landscape of the area in every decision, from how a house sits on its land to how its lighting looks at night.
We have completed homes in Portola Valley for clients who value their privacy, so, at their request, those projects are not shown here; we are happy to talk about them in person. Below are two homes now in design: the Smith Residence in Woodside, a modern single-story estate with long, low roofs, stone and glass walls and reflecting pools, and a single-story modern home in Portola Valley with floor-to-ceiling glass, cedar siding and wide decks stepping down to the lawn.
